File Folder + Duct Tape

I love this project because you only have to buy 2 items: file folders and duct tape!

I found a cute 9 pk of file folders at TJ Maxx for cheaper than 5pks other places that didn't even have designs!  The duct tape was cheapest and had the most variety at Target.  Since my folders were black & white on the outside, I figured I'd add some colors that matched the inside of the folders with the tape.

So, first all I did was lay out the folders like so...

I made sure the folders were spaced apart far enough to make it easy to insert papers.

Then, I measured a piece of the duct tape along the edge of the folders but did not make it long enough to cover the very top.  I pressed down gently just so the tape would stick.  Just in case I needed to readjust, I left it loose for now.

Next, I flipped the entire thing over carefully...

... and pressed the tape firmly on the back of the file folders.

I repeated this step with the other side as well (front & back views).

I also felt I needed to make slits in the duct tape where the openings on the file folders were so that I could fit 8 1/2"  by 11" papers in them.  So, I just carefully lifted each flap on the front of the folders and slid my scissors underneath the duct tape to make a small snip to the edge of the folder.  Then, to make it look neater, I tucked the excess duct tape in like so:

I realized that the bottom would look better/neater if I added one strip of duct tape across the bottom, and I like how it turned out:

Just to make it extra durable (and because the back will not be showing), I added strips of duct tape across the back.  I didn't put a strip on every single folder, I just skipped around.  If I need more, I can always add it later.

I punched 2 holes at the top of the folder to hang on my filing cabinet with the infamous Command Strips.

My last little touches for this project include labeling each folder with the most common papers I handle and personalizing it, of course!  A picture of the finished product is to come.  I have to decide on what exactly I want to label each folder and if I want to wait to personalize with my new last name on 11.10.2012 . . .

What to do with all those crayons??

I finished the first of many projects for my classroom today.  I finally sorted my crayons that were such a hassle to find certain colors last year.  Here's how it turned out:

Then, I took all the small, broken crayons and decided to reuse them instead of tossing!  So, I started with the monotonous task of peeling the little papers off...

Next, I sprayed a mini-muffin pan with cooking spray for easy removal and filled them up with colors I liked together.

After baking for about 30 minutes at 170 degrees Fahrenheit, I pulled them out...

... and let them cool for just a few minutes.

This is what I got!

I think the kids will really enjoy using them!

Well... 1 project down... 497 to go!

Nautical Theme Classroom

Our back-to-school theme this year is nautical in nature because our new superintendent's last name is Saylor.  So we are incorporating "Sayl-ing" into our themes.  I found cute bulletin boards with sailboats and such, but I really wanted to incorporate anchors because I think they are just so cute!  Also, sailboats may be a little infantile for my big, tough fifth graders!  I found the most adorable (yet, expensive) decorations at Hobby Lobby.  I may just have to cave and buy one of them, especially since they are 50% off right now!  Just one of these could make my door simply adorable!  I will post pictures of my completed door closer to August 8th (the big day) after I decide which way I want to go with the decor!

Using Wordle to Introduce Myself

I created this Wordle for students and parents at the beginning of the year to describe myself and let them know what type of teacher I am (or aspire to be).  I ask for parent input first on what type of teacher they would want their child to have, then I show them my characteristics and discuss what each one means as far as teaching/learning goes.  I also let my students create one of these within the first few days of school to describe themselves.  We print them off and hang them in the hallway.  This activity helps students to see what type of teacher they will have, and it helps me to get to know my students better.  Just go to www.wordle.net/create to create your own and customize with font, colors, and layout!  So fun!!

Mathlete T-shirt!

I was so excited when my fiance mentioned that he found these "Mathlete" t-shirts online.  After seeing the commercial in which the dad goes to watch his "mathlete" children (which I totally cannot find anywhere on youtube right now), I just had to have one.  It's an essential for every math teacher.  I know this will be a big hit with the kids this year.  So excited to show it off!

Back to School Magnets

To make sure my parents have access to my information (and incredibly long e-mail address) at all times, I have decided to purchase magnets with my contact information on them.  In the past, I have designed business cards to hand out, but those often get lost in the shuffle.  I think this idea will work much better.  Plus, the designs I found are way cuter.  AND they are only 9.99 @ vistaprint.com for 25 & that is all I will need for my homeroom kids!
